ABOUT LAWRENCE MURALS ARTS PROGRAM

The Lawrence Mural Arts Program is inspired directly from the great work and success of the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. After visiting Philly many times in the late 90's and early 2000's I was utterly amazed at the transformative and inspirational paintings throughout the city. Eventually I found my way to Lawrence where I began teaching Visual Arts at the Lawrence High School Campus in the Humanities and Leadership Development High School, and there I began teaching Mural Painting as an elective course. After many years teaching I realized that I should try to make this teaching concept a reality over the summer as well and paint murals on the walls of the City of Lawrence.

Sincerely,

Eric Allshouse

Our History

Established Officially in the Summer of 2013, the LMAP began many years before in 2008 creating a mural at the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence on Water Street. From there, Visual Arts Teacher Eric Allshouse continued creating more large public works as part of his job at the Humanities and Leadership Development High School while teaching Mural Painting from 2007-present. In this short time they have created almost twenty large scale paintings, displayed in and outside of the the school.

Mission Statement

The City of Lawrence Mural Arts Program creates inspiring, historical, and narrative art enriching and transforming public spaces and people's lives, working in collaboration with city agencies, artists, community based organizations, non-profits, private businesses, artists, schools and the community. The program also promotes restorative social justice through the art making process, by enabling at-risk youth opportunities to participate in creating positive change.
