Summer Program Murals

These murals were completed by students and volunteers of the Lawrence Murals Arts Program. Over a seven week period from July through August, 8 student workers, three volunteers, a lead teacher and assisstant, collaboratively designed and painted two large scale outdoor murals on some forgotten brick walls of downtown Lawrence. These selected areas were carefully chosen for the frequent grafitti problems in hopes the new artwork would solve the issue and transform the public spaces with images of hope, renewal, inspiration and history.

Music Legends

This 15'x90' latex paint mural pays tribute to nine music legends of many different genres. Starting from left to right, Romeo Santos, Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill, Prince,John Lennon, Alicia Keys, Jimi Hendrix, Aaliyah, Leonard Bernstein (Lawrence Native). This large scale mural was completed in two weeks by nine student participants from ValleyWorks Career Center of Lawrence and local volunteers. The mural is located in the courtyard at 151 Essex Street, Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Robert Frost Mural

This 15'x90' latex mural pays tribute to Lawrence native Robert Frost and his poem The Road Not Taken. The mural illustrates someone's path in life. The pregnant woman represents Mother Earth and home for us all. Next is a silhouette of a young family where the father or young man goes off to school. Then the blue graduate is filled with inspiring words that represent what it takes to get to this point in life. Next along the road is person entirely composed of different healthy food choices, mostly fruits and vegetables. After that there are over a dozen religious symbols surrounding a peace sign filled with a uniting quote. Finally, the roads comes close to the viewer at the end, and a flower is shown peeking through the crack in the sidewalk, mirroring the quote by Tupac at its side.
